The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Mosque of Sidi Uqba, located in the Medina neighbourhood, between Rue de la Kasbah and Rue el Farabi, Kairouan, Tunisia.

First Completed AD 670 /50 AH, rebuilt in AD 836; restored AD 1049-50 — The mosque, as it stands today, was built by the Aghlabid governor of Kairouan, Ziyadat Allah, between AD 817 and AD 838. He erected the building on the site of an older mosque, originally constructed by Uqba ibn Nafi at the time of the AD 670 Arab conquest of Byzantine North Africa. Historically, it has been accorded great significance as the first mosque in the first town of Islam in the West. (source: archnet)
